We wanted more of our own work running without us than any single product on the market would allow. Nothing covered it, so we built the platform we needed — and used it on ourselves before offering it to anybody else. Two of the things we built on it have since become products in their own right.

Case one · Threat investigation
Scarlet, the threat investigator
Every security tool NIS runs keeps its own diary, in its own console, in its own format. When something suspicious happened, a technician assembled the story by hand — an hour of reading firewall, DNS filter, mail, endpoint, identity, and cloud audit logs to find the handful of lines that mattered.
What it demonstrates: Evidence gathering across tools. One workflow reads several systems, each in its own format, and produces one consistent, reviewable output — with the judgment left to the technician, who now starts from the whole picture instead of a fragment.
- The problem
- Investigations lived in each technician’s head. The same tools, used six slightly different ways, and over the years the reports customers received drifted apart. The work was good either way; what a customer received depended on who did it.
- What we built
- One investigation workflow, hosted on Ops Organizer, that every technician works through. It gathers the evidence from each tool and assembles one timeline — what happened, in what order, and what it touched. Same method, same sources, same output, whoever picks up the ticket.
- The result
- Investigations were unified the day it went live, and a customer now gets the same report no matter who ran it. Where nothing was watching, the timeline says so — a gap is reported as a finding, not smoothed over.
Case two · Website monitoring
Webster, the exposure scanner
A customer found malware on a website NIS did not manage. We cleaned it up — but nobody could say how long it had been live, and nothing would tell us if it came back the next week.
What it demonstrates: Scheduled external scanning. The automation runs on schedule whether or not anyone remembers it, compares today against yesterday, and escalates to a person only when something needs attention — the same shape as the routine checks we build for customers.

- Website tampering is invisible until someone looks, and nobody’s job was to look. A check that depends on a person remembering to run it is a check that quietly stops running.
- What we built
- A scanner, again on Ops Organizer, that checks customer websites every day for injected scripts and other tampering. Anything suspicious opens a support ticket, so a person is told rather than a dashboard being updated.
- The result
- The customer got proof the site was clean and a standing watch on it. Nobody has to remember to look, and most real detections are not “this looks wrong” — they are “this was not here before.”
The part worth noticing
Each of those took about a day to stand up.
Not that we built two services — that neither needed a project plan, a budget round, or a quarter of engineering time. On a platform built for it, the distance between “this keeps costing us” and “this runs itself” is an afternoon.
What they replaced was reading thousands of lines of log files looking for the handful that mattered. That still happens — it just happens before anyone sits down, which leaves the team on the work customers actually hired us for.
